Oil seals prevent the leakage of lubricating oil from the rotating shafts or other moving parts of mechanical equipment. Similar to rubber gaskets , they also prevent external dust and moisture from entering the machinery.

What are the types of Oil Seals?

Skeleton Oil Seals

Skeleton oil seals are very common and consist of a central skeleton and a sealing lip. The skeleton is made of metal or synthetic materials, while the sealing lip is usually made of rubber or elastic materials. Skeleton oil seals maintain excellent sealing performance under harsh conditions such as high pressure and high speed.

V-type Oil Seals

Also known as V-rings, V-type oil seals are typically made of rubber or similar materials and are used to prevent dust and moisture from entering the bearing shaft of machinery. The cross-section of a V-type oil seal is V-shaped, allowing it to closely fit the rotating shaft. When the shaft rotates, the conical lip of the V-ring slightly compresses against the shaft surface due to centrifugal force, forming a dynamic seal.

Single Lip Oil Seals

Single lip oil seals have only one sealing lip, primarily used to prevent lubricating oil leakage.

Double Lip Oil Seals

Double lip oil seals have two sealing lips, with the inner lip preventing lubricating oil leakage and the outer lip preventing dust and dirt from entering.

Single lip oil seals are relatively simple in design and low in manufacturing cost. They are mainly used to prevent lubricating oil leakage, but they offer limited protection against dust, dirt, and moisture, and have a shorter lifespan compared to double lip oil seals. They are suitable for mechanical equipment and the automotive industry.

Double lip oil seals, with two sealing lips, provide better sealing performance and have a longer lifespan, making them more suitable for applications with high dust levels and humidity, such as construction machinery like excavators and loaders. During operation, they need to prevent dust and soil from entering the bearings while keeping the internal lubricating oil from leaking.
